One Year, 11 Developers: Chinese Fantasy Action RPG Downfall of Yellow Sky Hits 2M Trailer Views
‘Downfall of Yellow Sky has gone from a rough demo to a 2M-view trailer in just one year. Now the 11-person Chinese xianxia action roguelike has its Steam page live.’
The Chinese-developed game is a top-down action RPG with roguelike elements, set in a xianxia world, a Chinese fantasy tradition in which practitioners train to attain immortality.
Its Steam page is now live, offering a clearer look at how the project has grown.
We first encountered the game around a year and a half ago, when its developers sent us a demo and asked us to try it. The environments were basic, content was limited, and much of it felt like a prototype built to test the core combat. It was rough, but there was enough promise to make us want to follow its development.
We shared the game’s first trailer and recorded a hands on video of the demo. The developers also joined our comments section to discuss the game with players and hear their feedback.
More than a year later, the team’s new gameplay trailer passed two million views. Some viewers even returned to our original upload to compare the footage. Seeing the two side by side, the difference is striking: the environments, combat, and range of gameplay systems suggest a project that has moved well beyond its initial proof of concept.
The Steam page gives that progress more context. Alongside its top-down combat and roguelike elements, the game lets players advance through cultivation stages, gather rare materials, master their sect’s signature techniques, and find or forge magical artifacts. These systems build on the genre’s central idea of growing stronger on the path to immortality.
Its world is also taking shape. The Heavenly Dao—the cosmic order governing the setting—has fallen, cultivation realms are suppressed, and demons from beyond the world form part of its lore. Players follow Lu Chen as he seeks opportunities, collects artifacts, and pursues his own path to attaining the Dao.
This remains a game in development, and a trailer can only tell us so much about how the full experience will play. Still, the progress is encouraging, particularly for a team that grew from just eight developers to eleven.
What first caught our attention was the promise in a rough demo. The latest footage gives us more reason to keep watching. For players interested in action RPGs and Chinese fantasy, Downfall of Yellow Sky is a project worth keeping an eye on.
ABOUT—DOWNFALL OF YELLOW SKY
Downfall of Yellow Sky was handcrafted with zero investment by a team of eleven working out of a cramped, run-down apartment on the urban-rural fringe.
It is an action cultivation roguelite in which players dismantle and reconstruct weapons, forge spiritual arms, loot mystical artifacts, and wield divine abilities to build their own combat style.
